There’s much to love about hearing aids, which can make all the difference to how people with hearing loss can experience the world.
That’s true during everyday life, and it’s true when the person is on the road, too. When traveling, it’s hearing aids that’ll allow wearers to safely navigate their chosen destination and soak up as much of the ambiance as possible.
With that said, it’s important to take some extra precautions when hitting the road with hearing aids. When you’re far from home and potentially in a different climate, the tips that we’ve outlined below should ensure that you don’t unexpectedly run into any hearing aid-related issues.
Do: Pack Extra Batteries
Your hearing aid can’t amplify noises if it doesn’t have enough battery. When planning what you’ll pack, be sure to put extra hearing aid batteries at the top of the list. While it’s possible you’ll be able to pick up some extras when you land in your chosen destination, there are no guarantees, and it’s much better to be safe than sorry.
Have a more modern hearing aid that comes with rechargeable batteries? Make sure you’ve packed the charger and a plug socket adapter if you’re traveling internationally.
Don’t: Ignore Any Issues Before Traveling
Hearing aids do stop working from time to time, but they rarely stop working completely randomly. They normally give some warning sign that all is not well, such as inconsistent performance or unexpected noise. If your hearing aid is experiencing anything unusual whatsoever, then it’ll be best to pay a visit to your audiologist before you hit the airport. It’ll be much better to have an expert tweak any settings or make repairs while you're still at home, rather than when you’re in the middle of what should be an enjoyable getaway.
Do: Think About Where You’re Going
Your hearing aid might work perfectly in your home environment, but when you’re traveling, you won’t be in your home environment. As such, it’s important to research how to look after your hearing device in the climate that you’ll be visiting. If you’re traveling with hearing aids in winter, when they may be subject to colder-than-average temperatures, then it’s best to know what accessories you’ll need and how to care for your hearing device before you travel. Your hearing aid will be durable, but it may require a little extra TLC depending on where you’re going.
Don’t: Leave Them Exposed
Traveling takes you out of your routine in a good way, but the added adventure can bring with it some risks that can put your hearing aid’s functionality at risk. For example, you might find that you’re spending a lot more time around water than you usually would, or that you’re spending long days in the sunshine. Both of those things can cause damage to hearing aids if they’re left exposed. Taking a few steps to keep your devices protected from the elements will ensure that you can take full advantage of the benefits of hearing aids throughout your getaway.
